If you want it to hypnotize you, reading it slowly and attentively will help. Someone who didn’t want it to hypnotize them should skim over it or not read it at all.) Hi, I’m glad you are here. That means the bet is on. I’m reminding you to be sure you understand the terms of the bet. You bet me that I cannot hypnotize you. If I succeed in hypnotizing, you will do a small favor for me. If I were unsuccessful, you would get bragging rights, to say to anyone that you could resist my hypnotic spell. I have to say, though, that it is a very silly bet. One of the foundations of ethical hypnosis is that a person cannot be hypnotized unless they want to be. Why would anyone make that bet? I can tell you why I would. I like you, and I like spending time with you. I cannot even try to hypnotize you without paying a lot of attention to you, and I enjoy that. And if I succeed, I will get something more that I want. Because I enjoy the attempt for its own sake, whether I win or lose the bet, I still win. It’s a good bet for me. Why would you make this bet? Think about that. If someone cannot be hypnotized against their will, then this bet is pointless. You don’t gain anything. At least, if you lose the bet you aren’t going to lose very much. It seems pointless. Unless you enjoy spending time with me, too. Being the center of someone’s attention, as you are right now the center of mine, can be intoxicating. Or maybe the bet itself is an excuse to let yourself be hypnotized. Sometimes there is something you want that you don’t quite admit to yourself that you want, so that you want to resist it when it comes along. But you don’t want to resist too hard, because you really do want it. So it’s okay to resist my words, it’s okay to resist my suggestions. You get to decide how much you want to resist my suggestions and how much you get to accept and follow my suggestions. And I have now suggested to you that you get to decide, and it’s up to you whether you accept and follow my suggestion that you get to decide, or whether you resist my suggestion that you get to decide. Maybe you should resist that suggestion. And maybe you should resist my suggestion that you resist. Don’t let it confuse you. Because it is confusing. I am trying to hypnotize you and I am trying to help you resist. But if you resist my suggestions, you may be resisting my suggestions to hypnotize you, or you may be resisting my suggestions to help you resist. Did you know that you go into hypnotic states all the time, without anyone hypnotizing you? When you read a book. When you play a video game. When you watch TV or a movie. When you are listening to music. When you are reading something on Tumblr. I’m sure you can remember a time when you were doing one of those things, how it felt to be completely absorbed in it. If you can’t be hypnotized against your will, how is it that playing a video game or watching a movie hypnotizes you? It happens without your knowing it. It sneaks up on you when you aren’t looking. And I know that you have resisting on your mind right now. And you don’t know what is sneaking up on you. Sneaking up on you even though you are trying to resist it. What if you became so focused on resisting that you resisted all the way into trance? Imagine being in a state of mind where you resisted absolutely everything I said. Everything I suggested, you would do the opposite. If I said “stay awake” you would fall asleep. If I told you not to follow a suggestion, you would follow it. Or would you not follow it? But that would be following my suggestion, so you should not follow that suggestion, and instead follow the suggestion that I suggested that you not follow. Or you could pay close attention to everything that I say, and try to decide whether it is something to follow or something to resist. And so you will find yourself following what I suggest by resisting it, or resist it by following it. Pay close attention. I am giving you a suggestion right now, and I want you to resist it. Very good. It is okay to resist and follow my suggestion that you go further into trance now, just as it is okay to follow and resist my suggestion that you stay as you are now. Or you can let go of my suggestions and pay them no conscious heed, and let the deep parts of your mind listen and choose to follow or to resist. And in letting go, you can focus on my words without worrying about whether to follow them or to resist them. It’s so much easier that way, isn’t it? And the deep parts of your mind are listening when I tell you that when you are done reading this it will feel really good for you to reblog it, and maybe even add below it the comment, “I could not resist.” You will experience a thrill of pleasure when you reblog this post, and that pleasure will be more complete if you add “I could not resist” when you do. And now it is time to return to everyday life. I am going to count to five, and when I get to five you will be wide awake. One. Beginning to return to the surface Two. Closer and closer to being wide awake. Three. Unless you are still resisting, in which case you’ll be in deep trance. (I still win the bet if you are.) Four. Almost back to normal. Five. Wide awake!
