Day 19Reflections on: Vampires (1998)Wowwww this was bad. I watched this via another Netflix Party (aka Teleparty) with the same bunch of hilarious comedians as I did with The Boy (2016). This was a perfect movie for ridiculing. The main characters are played by James Woods and Daniel Baldwin. Both characters are so deeply unlikable I found myself rooting for them to get eaten.None of the vampires except for one king vampire has any lines. Why do none of the other vampires talk?? That was a terrible choice.Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks) is the only female character and she is treated terribly. Her acting is so superior to the other characters you feel bad not only for her character but also for her as an actor.James Woods wears sunglasses and terrible jeans the whole movie. It is shown early on in the story that bullets do no damage to vampires, yet for the entirety of the film these supposed expert vampire hunters shoot hundreds of bullets at vampires and seem scared and confused when they have no effect. Doesn’t pass the Bechdel test. Daniel Baldwin’s character takes a nap at one point and made the bizarre acting choice of pouting while sleeping. It was so bad we had to rewind it multiple times just to confirm that he was indeed sleep pouting. The male characters go out of their way to insult their surroundings - mostly small towns in New Mexico. They repeatedly use terms like “shithole” and “backwater”. This is in stark contrast with the picturesque vistas we continually see them inhabiting. This only causes the viewer to hate the protagonists more thoroughly. Bizarre filters were used to make the sky look spooky I guess but it just winds up looking like a bad old instagram filter. This is so shockingly bad it seems impossible that John Carpenter was ever capable of making good movies. Did he make a deal with the devil that expired after a certain year?? What happened? -- source link
