Day 11Reflections on: Of Unknown Origin (1983)Directed by George P. Cosmatos who went on to make beloved Sylvester Stallone movies Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and Cobra (1986). He’s also the father of Panos Cosmatos who made the excellent Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) and Mandy (2018). This is Peter Weller’s first leading role. I found him more compelling and likeable in this than anything else I’ve seen him in. This is based on the book The Visitor by Chauncey Goodrich Parker III. What a name! Peter Weller’s character, Bart, lives in a cool old house. He makes a point of telling anyone who will listen that he renovated the whole thing by himself. WE GET IT, BART! It’s set in New York but was shot in Montreal. One scene bizarrely features a robot. It is never referenced, or explained. Bart and his wife seem to have a huge collection of crystal eggs. They are never mentioned but seen frequently throughout their house.I felt like there were too many scenes of Bart at his office job. These weren’t very interesting but I guess if they weren’t in here the entire movie would have been mostly him in his house. That may have added a nice claustrophobic feel though. At one point Bart goes to a library to do extensive rat research. He reads rat books, watches rat movies, looks at rat microfiche and somehow gets a stack of loose photos of rat bites. His library is very comprehensive. At one point Bart refers to the rat as a “boneheaded fart”. Some graffiti on a newsstand later reads “BARF OUT”. This was a nice touch.Apparently this is Stephen King’s favourite movie??? This can’t be true. The more Bart unravels the cooler he gets. He eventually starts wearing a leather vest. Very cool. -- source link
