Day 34?Reflections on: Hannibal (2001)This should be so much better than it is! It’s directed by Ridley Scott, written by David Mamet and stars Julianne Moore, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Liotta and Giancarlo Giannini. Despite these facts, it’s a hot pile of trash. Julianne Moore does an admirable job at taking over the character of Clarice Starling. She almost nailed Jodie Foster’s accent from The Silence of the Lambs (1991), but they make her dress like a styleless narc and she ugly cries. Clarice would never ugly cry! Ray Liotta’s character is a dick and says embarrassing lines like “What are you writin’ a book or catchin’ a crook?”. I hoped he got eaten. They really went with the idea that Hannibal Lecter has just been wearing a big dramatic hat at a jaunty angle ever since the only time he does that in the final scene in The Silence of the Lambs. What a weird detail to hold on to. The story segues away from Clarice in a bizarre way in the middle of the film. Excellent large hog acting. Some of these pigs weighed over 700 pounds!I for one think it’s admirable that Doctor Lecter was attempting to pivot to a new career. Too much opera. I found it odd that they felt the need to give Hannibal Lecter’s character a catchphrase. What’s worse is that it was “okey dokey”. Don’t waste your time on this. Watch Manhunter (1986) or The Silence of the Lambs (1991) instead! -- source link
