An 1851 British map of Palestine. At this point in its history, Palestine had been a part of the Ottoman Empire for centuries, and had been home to both a large Arab Muslim majority and a number of minority groups. During the First World War, the British government made vague promises to both the Arabs – telling them Palestine would be part of a new united Arab nation – and Jewish people, who were told that this would be their new “national home.” In the end, the British kept Palestine for themselves as a mandate, or temporary colony, after the war. {WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
