statuesarecooliguess:casties:i’ve said it before, but Moist is pretty unique among Discworld protagonists in having never developed a strong inner awareness of self. hell, even Rincewind could tell you that he wants to be left alone. you’d think it would make him less of a compelling character, but if anything for me it does the opposite.#hi im obsessed with the part in going postal #where the narration goes #‘If he didn’t risk at least a tiny bit of life and a smidgen of limb he just wouldn’t be able to carry on being him.’ #and then Moist immediately panics about having thought that #he says hes lost ‘it’ (italicized) and cites both adora and ‘taking wages’ as the reasons #which rly makes it seem like the ‘it’ hes lost is his impermanence of self #the ability to walk away from not only a situation but the version of himself who was part of it #he also gets nervous in that book about going out in public as himself #without albert spangler or any of his other aliases as that extra layer between him and the world #he hasn’t used his own name since he was 14 #‘i commend my soul to any god that can find it’ isnt just him saying ‘lol im a heartless bastard’ #he’s worked very hard to hide his soul #its buried so deep that he panics when it starts to resurface #moist thinks hes not given to introspection #but he has all these rules he lives by to justify his own actions #no weapons no killing and everyone knows if you get lumbered with a good fake you just pass it off on someone else etc etc #moist is plenty good at introspection which is why hes buried himself in so many layers of persona; He Does Not Want To See It #‘If you kept changing the way people see the world you ended up changing the way you saw yourself’ (tags via @fortunatelyfresco)hi yes im sorry but i NEEDED to share your tags these are VERY good -- source link
