The plague was brought on by fleas carried by rats and the fleas would bite into their victims and inject them with the deadly disease. It spread quickly because the towns were always packed with people and the streets were filthy and crawling with rats. People who handled the sick or the dead didn’t wear any protective garments and they eventually got caught with the plague as well.
