On March 1st, songs by Korean bands including Monsta X, Seventeen, Dreamcatcher, Mamamoo, Oneus and Onewe, The Boyz, and Loona began disappearing from Spotify. Also, the songs of IU, Sunmi, and Hyuna have been withdrawn. This is all caused by the desire to support Spotify’s Korean counterpart Melon. Thanks to Kakao M’s lack of support and failure to sign a deal with Spotify, every song and album by artists who have contracts with Melon prior to 2019 have been withdrawn. It is also said that Kakao M will be creating a new streaming platform in collaboration with Melon just for Korean fans. At the beginning of February, Spotify finally launched its platform in South Korea, where streaming services like Melon and Genie have dominated the market for years. However, from day one, no music distributed by Kakao M was available for streaming on Spotify Korea. This is likely because Kakao M is the company in charge of Melon, Spotify’s biggest direct competitor in the country. Unfortunately, this action hits international fans who don’t have direct access to Melon or Genie, where they could easily listen to songs by their favorite artists. Songs that were not available on Korean Spotify as of today will also not be available on its other counterparts. This issue is really shocking for fans outside of South Korea. By deciding to withdraw some songs by Korean artists from Spotify, we have lost access to freely listen to the songs of our favorite artists. -- source link
