teawithantigone: Behind the Zines QOTD: who would you love to interview about their career? Here are 4 things I learnt doing 4 interviews for Antigone Magazine 1) Do more research than you think you need When I feel I’m pretty well prepared to interview someone, I always do just a little extra research at that point. Showing your interviewee that you know your stuff will set them at ease during the interview. Obviously I don’t research as if I’m writing their biography (because then I would have no questions for them in the actual interview!), but doing research beforehand gives you confidence in the interview to ask more questions. (More on that in number 3.) 2) Check your tech ♀️ I wish I had given myself more time to prepare right before the interview and to check my mic, camera, screen recording, and internet connection. Also: Backup your backups. Luckily this hasn’t happened to me, but if I lost my interview recordings I would have been at sea. 3) Ask questions Like, duh, right? Asking questions is the point of interviews! What I mean is if your interview subject says something you aren’t sure about, don’t be afraid to immediately ask them to clarify. While these kinds of things can be followed up through email afterwards if the need arises, it’s so much better not to waste your interviewee’s time. Asking follow up questions are also a great way to lead to more interesting topics that otherwise might not have come up if you’d decided to stick to the script. So go ahead and ask if you’re curious, as long as you’re not being straight-up nosy. 4) Take the leap ♀️ While most of what I’ve learnt has been about being better prepared, the number one thing I’ve taken away from these interviews is that practice is one of the best ways to learn. My first live interview did not go nearly as perfectly as I hoped it would, but the main thing I was thinking about afterwards was “that was pretty terrifying, but I can’t wait to try it again!” Knowing what I got wrong the first time around made me all the more excited to get it right the second time.
