Postcards: The White House, Washington, DC. Upper: Front View from Pennsylvania Avenue View; Lower: View of the Grounds Behind the Building, 1950sThe top card, mailed by my uncle to my aunt, is postmarked June 1954. The lower card was also in my aunt’s collection and both had been stapled into a scrapbook.“The oldest public structure in Washington and has the simple dignity of a gracious American home” was perhaps true until 2017 when it was redecorated to match the house of ill repute tastes of the current denizen. The coarse vulgarity of its current fittings with lots of tacky gold is truly breathtaking, certainly not characteristic of “gracious American homes.”Today is the day of the Easter Egg Roll on the White House Lawn (lower postcard), one of the more peculiar American celebrations. -- source link
