Ref: 178T1.189)This handbill refers to the Royal Menagerie that was established in 1773. It features a poem in the reverse. The Royal Menagerie at Exeter ‘Change was demolished in 1828 and moved to Surrey Gardens.A transcription of the handbill:A Noble Lioness and her Three fine Young Cubs are now to be seen at the Royal Menagerie, Exeter ‘Change. Being the Greatest Assemblage of Living Curiosities in the known World. In the same Apartment—Admittance One Shilling Two of the most extraordinary FULL-GROWN Male Lions, Ever seen in this Kingdom, having fine large flowing Manes; and a famous LIONESS. Of the same Clan, which instantly impresses every Beholder with that magnificent Idea so generally conceived of the King of the Brute Creation. the Form of these Lions are strikingly bold and majestic, having large shaggy Manes, which they can erect at Pleasure, and their tremendous Roaring, like Thunder, exhibits a Picture of Grandeur which no Words can describe. A Beautiful Fine young PERSIAN LIONESS. Noble Bengal Royal Tiger. The Ferocious PANTHER, from Buenos Ayres. an ELEGANT LEOPARD, from Algiers. The LAUGHING HYÆNA, from the Cape of Good Hope. A STRIPED HYÆNA, from Abyssinia. Two large Oriental Porcupines, from Lucknow, covered with an immense Number of hard spiny Quills, many of which are 20 Inches long. The FIERY LYNX, the most Ferocious and Watchful of All Animals. Just Arrived, A Flying OPOSSUM, from Botany Bay. A RAVENOUS WOLF, From the Alps. Those Animals are so voracious, in a Wild State, that they sometimes, from the Inclemency of the Weather, come down in Droves of Two or Three Hundred at a Time, and destroy both Man and Beast.
