uwmspeccoll: Milestone MondayFINNISH INDEPENDENCEOn this date, December 6 in 1917, Finland (Suomi) declared its independence from the Russian Empire. To commemorate this milestone, we present illustrations by the German-American illustrator and wood engraver Fritz Eichenberg for American poet, novelist, and translator Babette Deutsch’s Heroes of the Kalevala, a 1940 juvenile-literature version, published by Julian Messner, of Finland’s national epic, the Kalevala. The Kalevala is a 19th-century compilation of traditional Finnish and Karelian epic poetry compiled by Finnish philologist and folklore collector Elias Lönnrot (1802-1884) and first published in 1835. The Kalevala, regarded as the national epic of Karelia and Finland, has powerful implications for Finnish national identity and the intensification of Finland’s language strife that ultimately led to Finland’s independence from Russia in 1917.Happy Independence Day to the people of Suomi!!View other posts with works by Fritz Eichenberg.View other Milestone Monday posts. -- source link
