sfplhormelcenter:This Black History Month be sure to check out “Black Lesbians: An Annotated Bibliography” compiled by JR Roberts (Call #: 016.3926 R542b)Spanning over 300 bibliographic entries and featuring photos and quotes, each entry is accompanied by an annotation or fact about the women and events featured.Pictured above is Gladys Bentley who was a Harlem Renaissance blues singer and gender non-conforming cabaret performer in the early 1930s at Harlem’s Ubangi Club. During her stint as a headliner, she was backed up by a chorus line of drag queens and crossdressed. In addition to her comical, charming, and risqué acts Bentley was also one of the most established and financially prosperous African American women in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s. -- source link
