thefingerfuckingfemalefury:blackphoenix1977:zemo:sketchfanda:shanejayell:magnificentmarvels:Fearless Defenders Issue 5 by Amanda ConnerMarvel ComicsYet another good series that didn’t sell enough. AND had canon yuri…. it’s the thing though isn’t it?you got all these people demanding series with more female or diveristy-centric rosters and chars..but where are all those numbers for the sales? It’s a circular problem. Fanboys writing for fanboys have created an environment that isn’t interesting for the great majority of women and minorities (they may like the characters, cosplay, etc. but they don’t buy the comics because their characters are only cannon-fodder to showwcase the perenial favourites). Now, if a comic WITH minorities and women as a showcase is being published, that doesn’t mean that everybody is just jumping back in again, there is no pool of minority/female fans that is ever at the ready to buy the comics if a series they’d like suddenly shows up. THAT of course means that the series won’t get the sales it needs to sustain itself, and thus it vanishes before it can gather an appreciative audience. The solution, then, isn’t to have one or two books in the whole line that are inclusive. The solution is to make all the books inclusive and watch as the fanbase slowly builds.Of course, the years of almost incestuous self-serving of the superhero comics industry may have already brought it to the point of no return, where, if they switched and catered to a wider fanbase, the time between the old fanbase declining, because they don’t feel catered to anymore, and the new fanbase having built up would be too long to survive.Really disappointed that this book didn’t last. That post right there sums up the problem with superhero comics nicely They publish a thousand comics of the same tedious heteronormative shit, give us jack shit in the way of representation and routinely treat queer women like dirtWhy WOULD queer women give a shit about what Marvel or DC are doing when all they’re willing to throw us is table scraps and when half the time the few queer female characters who DO appear end up having something horrible happen to them, have their relationships end in misery or get killed off?Picture this: Your a queer woman. You want stories about yourself. Not being a millionaire you have a finite amount of money you can spend on luxury items each month, you haven’t got unlimited funds You can either buy: a DVD of a series like Orange is the New Black or a book written by an actual lesbian writer featuring openly lesbian couples who get to have a happy ending together Or hell even buy a comic from a small publisher like IDW or Boom! or Image that has canon queer MAIN characters in the cast (Like Rat Queens, Lumberjanes, Jem or Red One for example) ORGo to a comic book shop to look through the fifty thousand tedious as fuck superhero books about dull, worthless characters in the vain hope that maybe you’ll find ONE title or maybe even two that has a couple of queer women in it as minor or supporting characters and keep your fingers crossed that just this once they don’t wind up being tortured, abused, killed off or otherwise treated like shit by the narrative It’s really kind of a no-brainer, isn’t it? We don’t want one or two characters in a handful of titles that no one’s ever going to hear about and that aren’t going to last six issues if they’re lucky…we want actual positive representation throughout these fictional universes Add to that the fact that these books and the fact they have queer women in them get zero publicity so no one’s even fucking heard of them…like, the reason why Fearless Defenders didn’t sell well?Because practically no one knew it EXISTED And those that did? Most had NO clue that it had lesbian representation in it because anyone who didn’t have a Tumblr and hadn’t seen any posts about it most likely would have no clue who Annabelle Riggs or Ren Kimura WERE much less that they were a couple As the above poster says so well, what DC and Marvel need to do is make ALL their books inclusiveThere is NO good reason for their not be queer and trans women characters in EVERY title that they publish. I mean really, someone tell me…what reason is there, other than the writers being either too fucking bigoted or too fucking cowardly for their to not be lesbian and trans characters and heroes in every book DC and Marvel publish? It’s not that books with queer characters don’t sell.,,it’s that DC and Marvel only ever put queer characters in books that wouldn’t have sold well whether they had queer/trans characters in them or not. Like, Fearless Defenders could have been about nothing but straight cis women and it still would have only lasted twelve issues if it was LUCKY In fact the previous Defenders title, which was INFESTED with nothing but straight cis characters managed to limp to the exact same number of issues (Twelve) that this book did before getting cancelled By comparison, one of the rare times we got a major high profile ongoing series that starred an openly lesbian hero who was PROMOTED as being an openly lesbian hero (Batwoman), that book lasted forty issues, a hell of a lot longer than most of the garbage DC and Marvel published featuring various boring straight cis characters And it would have lasted even longer I’m sure if DC hadn’t fucked the title up with their bigoted bullshit, driving the original creative team off it and putting some hack like Andreyko in charge…but even with the shitty new creative team enough people stuck with the book for it to last another sixteen regular issues (And two annuals) -- source link
