le-rococo-en-versailles:This 1701 portrait of Louis XIV by Rigaud shows the Sun King dressed in lavish robes and red-heeled shoes (Talon Rouge). Red was a very important color for the monarchy. Only aristocratic men had the right to wear shoes with red heels. Louis XIV passed an edict claiming only nobility could wear them. Red dye was expensive, meaning that only the rich were able to afford wearing them. It also implied that their wearers were “always ready to crush the enemies of the state at their feet” -- source link
