We went out for a walk in the evergreen wood behind the house yesterday, and found two stands of dead trees (fir or spruce, I think) well wrapped in my beloved Cladonia & their affiliates. There were also abundant tufts of Polytrichum, those feathery green characters in the last picture – the biggest ones I’ve seen, and incredibly soft. I want to steal samples of these & try to make them grow in our garden, but I have doubts because this part of the wood is so shady and so dense with evergreens (and thus acidic soil) – very different from our yard. I may try regardless, though. The Cladonia I collected and ‘planted’ out back isn’t dead yet, whatever that’s worth. And I have one wee patch of Polytrichum in the yard (malnourished midgets compared to the ones in the picture above), so there must be some chance of growing them there. -- source link
