“It’s the same old themeSince nineteen-sixteenIn your head, in your head, they’re still fightingWith their tanks, and their bombsAnd their bombs, and their gunsIn your head, in your head, they are dying” — The Cranberries (1994) ‘It’s the same old themeIn two thousand eighteenIn your head, in your head, they’re still fightingWith their tanks, and their bombsAnd their guns, and their dronesIn your head, in your head, they are dying” — Bad Wolves (2018) The same song, performed by the original artist, and then redone in 2018. I listened to both versions today, and while there is a lot going on with these songs, I do want to point out one thing that is super easy to miss. In the original version, lead singer of The Cranberries, Dolores O'Riordan discusses how war still happens, and has been happening since 1916. For those that aren’t History buffs, 1916 was smack in the middle of World War 1. And she was right, the whole world was on fire, and that hasn’t changed. Fast forward to 2018, when the band Bad Wolves performed the same song. They rewrote than one line, just the one, where they changed the date to 2018. That’s a big deal, because it highlights an ugly truth here in America. It is the same old theme in 2018. Now I don’t really buy into the whole idea that there are wars being waged against the poor, or women, homosexuals, immigrants, black people, hispanics, all that crap. I honestly think that’s just mob mentality fueled by social media. That’s not to say that there aren’t some major issues that need to be addressed. And I’m not speaking of any wars we might be in with other countries. The War, the war that I see at least, is on each other. I am a proud American, and I feel so incredibly lucky to live in the country that I do. I say that with my head held high, even despite everything that is going on. My home, unfortunately, here in 2018 is at war with it’s self. People are so angry and hostile towards each other, it’s ridiculous. I barely go on Facebook anymore, because I know what I’m going to see, people bickering at each other. I literally watched a discussion yesterday between two people I went to middle school with who were friends threatening each other over a political disagreement. These guys have known each other for over 10 years, threatening violence to each other over a politician. That kind of thing is happening on a massive scale, just people yelling on tv, rioting, families being ripped apart, oh and everyone with a cell phone sharing their two cents on Twitter and Facebook, doing no research at all, just spouting off to the whole world. The irony of writing this on a social media platform is not lost on me, just roll with it. It’s ridiculous, but I came on here just to share my love for both versions of that song, and ending up ranting hardcore about something that’s been bothering me for a while(drugs are bad kids). The point of all this… Well, there is no point so much as an opinion fueled by annoyance, but there is a request. Don’t be twats to each other. The system is designed to let your voice be heard through your votes, so use that. Go vote! And if you want to talk about sensitive issues, be ½ civil ½ patient. Treat folks with respect and don’t retaliate when they don’t do the same, because you know not everyone is going to be civil, but you don’t have to make it worse. Unintended rant over. -- source link
