joachimmurat:fapoleon-bonerparte:Les Coiffures de l’armée FrançaiseA popular (and odd) fashion among Napoleon’s hussars were the cadenettes. They consisted of two side braids worn in front of the ears, while the rest of the hair was gathered in braids behind the ear. Then they were tied behind the neck to form a queue. Cadenettes were either reinforced by small wooden rods in the middle of the braids or by small bits of lead at the bottom of each braid to make them straight. The cadenettes were popular for two main reasons. First, many soliders considered it fashionable to wear one’s hair like this. Second, and probably the most important, cadenettes helped save lives. Supposedly, the braided hair become so thick and sturdy that it could deflect or reduce the deadly blow from an enemy sabre. Eventually military regulations changed and the cadenettes had to be cut off.And they’re mighty cute! -- source link
