libutron:The Elephant Parade: Art and Conservation of the Asian ElephantOver the last 100 years, the number of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) has decreased with 90%. Today, there are ca. 35,000 Asian elephants throughout Asia. Almost 150,000 Asian elephants died in the last 25 years. In Thailand there are just 4,000 elephants left, of which only 1,500 live in the wild.In support of the conservation of the endangered Asian elephant, since 2007 Elephant Parade®, a social enterprise that combines art, business and conservation, exhibits in various renowned cities life-size statues of baby elephants and auction at prestigious gala events. The Elephant Parade® is the world’s largest open air exhibit in a public urban space, featuring approx. 1.50m tall, artistically designed elephant statues, that seeks to attract public awareness and support for Asian elephant conservation. Since 2011 The Asian Elephant Foundation uses the Elephant Parade® to raise worldwide awareness of the endangered Asian elephants, and finances protection programs to sustainably preserve habitats for animals and humans alike. Some of the host cities have included Amsterdam, London, Singapore, Milan and Copenhagen. This year (2014) the city of Hong Kong will receive the next Parade.Read more about Elephant Parade®Photos (top to bottom):1.
