[Marzabaan, the messenger of Kisra (the Persian emperor), came to al-Madinah to meet the leader of the believers Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He looked for the palace of the caliph, eager to meet the man who had entered dread into the Persian and Roman empires. But he didn’t find in the city a palace or any guards. So he asked people where the Caliph Umar was. They said “we don’t know, but may that man sleeping under that tree is him.” Marzabaan didn’t believe them so walked to the tree and saw Umar sleeping on the bare ground with no blanket on him and wearing his old cloak. Marzabaan stood amazed and said his famous saying: “You ruled justly, felt unafraid (from the people) and fell asleep (without need for anyone to guard you), O Umar”.]Originally found on: asemkamal -- source link
