charminglyantiquated:The Moon/Alice in Wonderland from the Literary Tarot! The Moon was the very first card we worked on, way, way back at the beginning of the project! We didn’t know what colors we’d be using, if we even did choose to use color, rather than black and white with foil (and even then, we didn’t know if we’d choose gold foil or another color!) These are approximately a tenth of the different looks the card had before we settled on the final piece, and from there the overall look of the Literary Tarot. It’s a lot of fun for me to look back on the many, many different directions the deck could have taken! In the final version of the card, I tried to keep a reflection of the classic Moon card. The stairs and trees are intended to mirror the path and distant towers, with the moon lighting Alice’s way as it hangs impossibly in the air below the earth. Dani Hedlund paired the Moon with Alice in Wonderland because as a card of illusion, imagination, and deception, it meshes beautifully with Alice’s journey through Wonderland, as she navigates a surreal world where nothing is quite as it should be.
