davidkendall: ropeandcoffee: isay: odysseyofabes: mapsontheweb: How many syllables are in caramel? Clearly 3. Carmel is a place in northern California. FFS. I’m in California and since Carmel is a place here, I say care- uh- mel. For years, I thought “car-muhl” and “care-uh-mel” were two different things, and they technically are - caramel is the food/candy thing, and Carmel is the person/place thing. Then I learned that some people tend to use them interchangeably when talking about the food/candy, which is technically incorrect. But just like “irregardless” and the pronunciation of the word “niche” as “neesh” (which makes me crazy), the incorrect use of “carmel” when one means “caramel” is just something it looks like we’re going to be stuck with. Yes, I am the grammar police. It’s not a pretty job, but someone has to do it. Either way, it’s gross. -- source link
