Couldn’t help but feel a sense of disbelief in the timing and tangents around us, these invisible things in the air, pushing, guiding us, swaying our choices, directing us to one another. Martsch once said that there are always these things, these ideas floating above our heads… All around the world, all around all of us…. ancient ideas waiting to become new, these ripples of sounds, images and ideas just waiting for the ones that have learned to fine tune or perhaps for any one at all, just by chance, by mistake, waiting for one to capture and translate and manifest into our world. …I digress again… So,..Matthew Barlow’s request was a grand gesture because of the artistic significance within the request. Barlow’s sound art incorporates layers of field recordings, completely environmental. The environmental sounds being translated, reconfigured unto a personal mode for expression.Took moments in the afternoon and listened to the recording prior to the release and felt he was on a very similar meditative path that i had been trailing on during that time. Barlow was searching for meaning within his world, he was searching for symbols. I was proud and excited to be a part of this, very excited. He explained the tape’s release was to be called “Product”. Perhaps we both knew or felt that nothing else had to be said. So i grabbed my camera and put some philosophy, new world perspectives and personal commentary into play.Living in Glendale at the time, i couldn’t think of a more significant land (by proxy) to elaborate on for this project, so i grabbed the 35mm camera, one roll of cheap ultramax color film and went into the field. Although, this image did not make the cut for the cover but it was almost a good contender. From all the negatives, i found this apropos to the mechanism and process to which Barlow and i were threading on. There are a million things I’ve learned about the emptiness of what is known as art but learning about the process with direct intent as oppose to the accidental discoveries in creating is beyond mystical. Beyond my own comprehension. Nevertheless, I did find something in what i wasn’t looking at again. In searching within a consumerist setting, whether as a Freudian urge or not… the discomfort and illusions were there. Graphic and violent as they are systematic.
