ruthbancroftgarden: Lobivia formosaThis plant was formerly placed in the genus Soehrensia, but current taxonomic thinking holds that the soehrensias are essentially giant lobivias, so now we call it Lobivia formosa. It truly is a large plant - our specimen is about 38 inches tall (almost a meter), and it is at least 40 years old. Plants in habitat in northwestern Argentina are reported to get as tall as 2 m (about 80 inches), and this suggests that they must live to be very old indeed. In cultivation, it is quite rare to see one as large as ours, and it is wonderful to see it flowering so profusely. It should be more widely grown, because it can take temperatures down to at least -5 C (23 F), and it is adaptable enough to grow in our winter-rainfall climate here in California, even though it comes from Argentina, where it gets its rain mostly in summer. The many thin white spines make it look almost furry, but they are sharp enough to command respect.-Brian -- source link
