historicalbird:Detail from the central panel of the Barberini Ivory, Byzantine, ca. early 6th centuryThe Barberini Ivory is a five-panel carving created in Constantinople in Late Antiquity and is assumed to be one half of a diptych. The central figure carved in high relief above depicts a victorious unidentified Byzantine emperor, often believed to be Justinian, Anastasius I, or Zeno. The ivory was transported to Gaul in Western Europe some time in the 6th or 7th century, evidenced by the 7th century inscription of a list of Frankish kings located on the back, which was done at the request of the Visigothic princess Brunhilda of Austrasia. The Louvre[img source] -- source link
