meaninginmakeup: thatdiabolicalfeminist: yayfeminism: Great news guys So if women wear makeup at work we’re “frivolous” and it harms our leadership chances.. but if we don’t wear makeup we are being unprofessional and are deemed less competent. So we just need to think of a way for women to not have faces and we’re all set A clear example of how performance of femininity is both compulsory (enforced by social, legal, and economic consequences) and devalued because of misogyny. [pictured is a tweet from Telegraph which reads: Why wearing too much makeup harms a woman’s leadership chances. It shows two pictures of two women. One woman is white, and one is black. There’s a picture of each of them with makeup in one, and without in the second picture. An excerpt from the article reads: Dr. Christopher Watkins of Abertay’s Division of Psychology, said it was possible women wearing makeup were seen as more frivolous in the workplace, even though previous work suggests makeup makes women more dominant. The findings are in contrast to Harvard University research in 2016 which found that women who wore makeup were deemed more competent at their jobs and more likely to be promoted. /End exerpt/caption] I feel like “devalued because of misogyny” obscures what’s actually going on. It’s not so much that men are looking at women doing lots of makeup and thinking “oh stupid women with their stupid lesser hobbies, why can’t they spend their time on cool men stuff like sports.” Rather, what’s most likely happening is men cannot see women simultaneously as competent equals and potential sexual conquests, and makeup seems to trigger that “sex object” mentality. -- source link
