qsy-complains-a-lot:Thompson M1A1 submachine gunDeveloped by John T. Thompson, designed by Oscar V. Payne and manufactured by the Auto-Ordnance Co. in Ohio for the United States’ armed forces during WW2..45ACP 30-round removable box magazine, delayed blowback, automatic fire. The design of Thompson’s team started as a project for a self-loading rifle to replace the Springfield M1903 in 1915, but after finding out that the delayed blowback mechanism they intended to use only accommodated pistol cartridges, it was changed to the new idea of a ‘trench broom’ to equip the AEF over in France. The gun was only ready for production in 1921 however, long after the Great War ended, and would only be adopted by the US in 1938 shortly before WW2 after a successful career on both side of the law. -- source link
