cantgetanygayer: Josephine Hutchinson (October 12, 1903 – June 4, 1998) was an American actress. Hutchinson and Le Gallienne were intimately involved in 1927 for a number of years, although Hutchinson was married. When Hutchinson’s husband initiated divorce proceedings and named Le Gallienne as a correspondent, the media had a field day. They referred to Hutchinson as “the shadow actress.” At the time, the term “shadow” was a euphemism for “lesbian.” For years these two were inseparable but Le Gallienne never stopped messing with women. In 1934, Le Gallienne fell for Marion Evensen, a new actress in the company. Le Gallienne, in front of Jo and others took Marion to her berth to sleep with her openly humiliating Jo. Jo left the train to stay in a hotel. The next day Jo went to the theatre in Texas to act and was advised that Le Gallienne had dumped her and was now with Marion. Jo attempted to reconcile and Le Gallienne humiliated her further. Jo left to act in Hollywood movies and, apparently due to studio pressure (the Le Gallienne scandal was still known), married a man a year later (and in an act to maybe punish Le Gallienne married the man on Le Gallienne’s birthday). Le Gallienne, by this point, realized she wanted Jo back. The two would have sexual liasons over the next half century and would even try living together in the early 1980’s but Jo could never forgive Le Gallienne. Hutchinson was a common fixture at lesbian parties and clubs. There was a lesbian scandal at Warner Brothers involving actresses. Supposedly, Josephine Hutchinson and Margaret Lindsay were photographed at a lesbian orgy, and Warner Brothers was blackmailed. -- source link
