Using the fact that a light year is the distance traveled by light in a year (365 days) speed was then calculated. The 16 lightyears is in reference to the distance from Earth to Vulcan. Using all of this, the amount of time it would take to get from Earth to Vulcan at the various warp factors could be easily calculated.
