classicalmonuments: honorthegods: Sacellum (Lararium) from Herculaneum 1st century C.E. Carbonized wood, stabilized with beeswax, and restored sections of modern wood. One of four wooden household shrines recovered from Herculaneum, the doors of this cabinet are capped with a triangular pediment in the style of the roofs of Classical temples. At the time this sacellum was discovered, the top portion contained statues of the gods of the household including Venus and Hercules, the founder and patron of Herculaneum. The bottom portion of the cabinet is presumed to have been used for storage of items relevant to household worship. The double-folding doors of the shrine are typical of the type of doors used in Roman homes.
