Rowling says Hogwarts is free. but the students still have to buy their books and school supplies don’t they? Yes but if you’re in a situation where you can’t buy your school supplies (for example if you’re an orphan without inherited wealth like Tom Riddle) then there is in fact a Hogwarts fund to use so if you really can’t afford stuff you still don’t have to worry. Not to mention the school keeps copies of the books so students can use in an emergency, such as Harry and Ron’s potion books in HBP. Yes but think of how high taxes would be if the ministry paid for Hogwarts education. This isn’t a day school but a boarding school so there are more fees involved. You need to pay the heads of houses for staying overnight, the houseelves need to be fed, the students need to be fed- and that is an elaborate spread they get each day. And then there are the incidental fees like upkeep and maintenance and if something breaks. It’s no wonder wealthy purebloods are annoyed at muggleborns- they get all of the benefits without having to pay into it. It’s been said before that the magical world lives on a fake economy that is basically trading monopoly money. The economy is heavily controlled by government and the society probs relies on the overall ignorance of basic economy to maintain itself - it’s been hinted that some wizards don’t know how to even read in Hogwarts, and there is no preschool education on maths or logic on the kids pre hogwarts. Looks like Government is actually playing monopoly w the society. Other than some kids that obviously had general cognitive issues (such as Vincent Crabbe or Gregory Goyle) I don’t remember any hints towards children being illiterate or lacking elementary skills. Eleven yr old kids in general are not logical so it’s not surprising first years would lack those skills. Even the older students are still teenagers, with all the emotional and illogical thinking that goes along with that. As for the government, it certainly seems that they do manipulate the economy but only on a macro level. Individual citizens get salary or wages and have to pay for goods and services. In this way wizarding Britain isn’t much different from any modern nation that involves itself in ‘currency regulation’ -- source link
