I’ve always been fascinated by the Japonisme influence on Impressionism… Van Gogh loved the Japanese woodcut and it shows in his work. “Courtesan” was based on a woodcut design by Kesai Eisen which he directly traced from a magazine cover reproduction, along with images taken from various other prints in Van Gogh’s private collection. The cranes were copied from an unknown artist and the frog and toad taken from a print by Utagawa Yoshimaru II. “Copying the masters to become one” I’ve been having so much fun recreating woodblock prints of Van Gogh’s paintings of woodblock prints! This one has been quite the challenge as I have never done figurative work…till now! I still have a few more layers to draw but am hoping to have this beauty finished by the @armadillobazaar … stay tuned! https://www.instagram.com/p/CW3iZ1zFFlA/?utm_medium=tumblr -- source link
