When September came, I wanted to start it with a bang, so I picked a very special, rather unconventional deck to work with: The Mystical Dream Tarot, published by Eddison Books. Subbed “Life guidance from the depths of our unconscious”, this tarot “emerges directly from the mystical realms of dream and vision, manifesting completely fresh imagery”. Created by Janet Piedilato with wonderful art by Tom Duxbury, each image comes directly from the author’s own dream experience. The depictions in the cards are not traditional, so while you may need to step back from your current background knowledge, it is a great deck to explore tarot in a different light, always taking dreams into account. Dreams are boundless, and these images are the result of the author’s experience following the tradition of humanistic and transpersonal psychology of self-actualization. The images, brought to life through a limited palette and delicate artwork, are simply striking. The swirls, the expresiveness, the slightly muted hues, and their openness do a great job at transporting not only my sight, but my focused thoughts, to each card and its details. The images aren’t the only changed element, as many majors are renamed to better suit the deck (for example, the Emperor becomes the Dream Protector, Death becomes the Wise Fox, Strength becomes Sophia). The courts are also renamed. I think this is a clear example of how this decks needs to be understood as it is rather than trying to force it into a square box of keywords or preconceived ideas. Every deck is an intuitive tool, but in this case it becomes even more apparent. The 159 page juicy guidebook does a great job to walk us through the special nature of this deck. A meaty intro leads into the majors, with two pages for each card. Then, there’s a card for each minor. On “Working with the deck” we find spreads with sample readings to see how they’d work. Finally, we get some further reading, which is always interesting. It is beautifully written, and it’s easy to read it from cover to cover to dive deep into this deck. Both the deck and book come in a sturdy slid-out box.Ever since finding the Mystical Dream Tarot, I have been in love. It is a challenging companion that sets out to re-work any preconceptions and remind me that tarot is, after all, a tool for intuition. Though obvious, I like using it for dream interpretation, because it feels that I can better connect with the hazy nighlty images of my mind this way. The artwork is absolutely enchanting (and in fact, is what attracted me to this deck first and foremost), and I can’t finish this post without mentioning again the perfection of the limited palette and how well it works for a deck like this. An absolutely stunning work of art and study, this is a deck that you should really take into consideration! -- source link
