the-science-llama: The Kopp Etchells Effect What are these halos of light being caused by? Static electricity maybe? It is actually resulting from the dust striking the blades. But it’s not the dust making the lights, its the abrasion coats. Image When the dust hits the blades, pieces of the abrasion coating get picked off and because they are pyrophoric, they ignite. It is easier for the pieces to ignite once they are chipped off into small pieces because it increases the surface area and allows it to react with oxygen more easily.
