destinationtoast: [bigger] [bigger] [bigger] [bigger] TOASTYSTATS: THE STAR WARS FANDOM AWAKENS! I took a look at what’s been happening in the Star Wars fandom since the release of The Force Awakens (and earlier). A special request, because I know there’s been some controversy in the fandom: be kind to one another in the notes of this post. Thoughtful discussion of ships or anything else is awesome, but don’t be mean about what anyone else likes. I see every reblog note and tag in my activity tab, and any ship hate or other wank will make me a sad toast. Click through for summary, notes, updates, corrections. Weiterlesen I think it’s great how a lot of people keep whining about racism because of the change in shipping preferences. And they completely ignore that a lot of them sabotaged their own ship: Anyone who paid only the slightest bit of attention to the fandom saw that one of the main reasons why people quite literally jumped ship was because of the relentless and annoying policing going on in the ships in question. The Kylux fandom started out as the unapologetic trash ship. Shippers sat there going “lol these guys are already terrible people - there is almost nothing we can write to make it worse so go ahead, everything is fair game!”.While the Stormpilot fandom started out fluffy and sugary (also keep in mind that fluffy and sugary gets boring fast, but that’s another point entirely) and descended into a huge mess of people policing authors and artist about what they were “allowed” to do with those characters and what not. (And to be quite honest, for me the real racism here is putting the POC characters on a pedestal and not treating them the same as the white characters under the guise of crying “fetishisation” but hey.) Personally, I’m not surprised that this lead to a change in the shipping camps. It’s not racism (a lot of people ship BOTH Stormpilot and Kylux and I highly doubt all those fans suddenly turned racist halfway down the road) but rather overzealous gatekeepers shooting themselves and their ship in the foot with their behaviour. It’s hard to ship something when every single time things get a little darker or kinkier, someone breaks down the door shouting “evil racist fetishists” in your face. Nobody wants to be accused of “doing it wrong” all the time. Restricting your own possibilities and options for a ship until there is nothing left to write than boring fluffy drivel unless you want to invite anon hate and then whining when people switch sides is pretty amazing. Because the same people who now cry “racism” at the Kylux fans are the same who bashed their own lovely artists and writers whenever they deviated from that imagined “norm” some apparently fixed for the Stormpilot ship. -- source link
