reinadehistoria:Women of History: Henrietta Maria of BourbonHenrietta Maria of Bourbon was born at the Palais du Louvre, in Paris, France, on the 25th of November 1609. She was the sixth, and youngest, child of Henri IV of France, and Marie de’ Medici. When less than a year old her father was assassinated by a Catholic fanatic. Her brother, Louis, become Louis XIII, and her mother, Marie de’ Medici, became regent.Henrietta Maria grew up under the supervision of Francoise de Montglat. When her elder sisters, Elisabeth and Christine Marie, were married off Henrietta was bestowed the title of “Madame Royale”.Henrietta was married off to Charles, at the age of 16, on the 1st of May 1625. Her marriage was to be a rough and complicated one, with Charles isolating her from the many members of her retinue, sending most of them away within the first years of their marriage. Despite that the couple had nine children:Charles James, Duke of Cornwall: 13th March 1629-13th March 1629Charles II, King of England: 29th May 1630-6th February 1685Mary, Princess Royal: 4th November 1631-24th December 1660James II, King of England: 14th October 1633-16th September 1701Elizabeth: 29th December 1635-8th September 1650Anne: 17th March 1637-8th December 1640Catherine: 29th January 1639-29th January 1639Henry, Duke of Gloucester: 8th July 1640-18th September 1660Henrietta: 16th June 1644-30th June 1670When Civil War broke out Henrietta Maria fled to the Hague. She returned to England, then fled once more to Paris. When Charles was restored Henrietta returned to England, but didn’t stay long. She died in Colombes France on the 10th of September 1669.Though referred to as Queen Mary, Henrietta always signed her name Henriette R., not giving up her French roots. -- source link
