Storme Delarverie, often referred to as the “Rosa Parks of the queer community,” is credited with throwing the first bricks during what’s commonly referred to as the Stonewall riots of 1969 - but Delarverie herself would be the first to tell you it wasn’t a riot. . “It was a rebellion, it was an uprising, it was a civil rights disobedience — it wasn’t no damn riot,” she’s quoted as saying. . Storme died at age 93 in 2014, but her legacy carries on through her post-Stonewall work. She served as Vice President of the Stonewall Veterans Association and patrolled traditionally queer neighborhoods in New York.
