This #starttofinish for #throwbackthursday shows how my official 40th anniversary print for The Warriors developed last year. Of course the ‘hard work’, and I use that term very loosely, comes before that rough sketch, where you’re hunting for reference and gradually trying to build a composition that makes sense. It’s about getting the right hierarchy of characters, and with so many, it’s an incredibly time-consuming endeavour, albeit one that I love when it finally starts to work! This one ended up with a tinted palette so I could make a screen print without needing too many colours. As you can it didn’t change too much between the two, though in the end it seemed to work better without the Wonder Wheel, and just showing the start and end of their journey with the subway map on the left and right sides respectively. I tend to go off and paint each character separately, and then replace them one by one in the main file, which is incredibly satisfying! Produced in collaboration with Fanattik, and printed brilliantly by White Duck. My store is closed for the foreseeable future but at some point you’ll be able to buy the digital A3 print again.
