Kyoto Station: the zoom across to the east end .. [4[4] / 5[4]] Kyoto is famous for its temples, oases of quiet contemplation. But one of the most spectacular structures you will see there is the Japan Rail Station building, which at first glance looks completely alien to the culture of Kyoto, but is really a mammoth modern take on the same principles. It is cavernous, a hollow enclosure defined by a skin of steel mesh, and the higher you climb out away from the busy platforms, the calmer and more contemplative it becomes. Kyoto, Kansai Prefecture, Japan. It is impossible to take a good photo of it, because it is a truly experiential space. But like all things Japanese, there are often sightlines and narrow areas of focus that stand out. I am showing one such here, a zoom through to the east end, where as is usual all over Japan, several individually minimalistic pieces of art and architecture and glass and steel and shadowplay slosh around in fierce dissonance. -- source link
