renaissanceamazon: I was #bornandraised in #NYC around people from all over the world. Most people in #NY are not #American and seem to have a hard time believing that I am. Every time someone tells me what island and/or country they’re from and them they ask me where I’m from and I tell them I’m from “here” they look at me like I’m speaking a different language. Most of them have never traveled around this country, they only travel out of the country. But even with that being said…I don’t understand how they be acting like they never heard of an #AfroAmerican. Don’t we all know #MichaelJackson, #Beyonce, #ErykahBadu, #WhitneyHouston. Etc. etc??? Adding to that I notice that black people in NY who are from #Africa and #theCaribbean tend to know absolutely nothing about Afro American cultural traditions in the South….because it is not present in the North. I’m as #AllAmerican as they get…my Mom’s from Western, PA close to Ohio and her dad is from #Pensacola, FL and my dad is from #SaintAugustineFL (the oldest city in America). I grew up hearing and witnessing the differences between southern and northern culture. And I just wish that if people are going to chose to come from another land to live on this land that they at least take the time to learn and #respect our #history. It’s only right. -- source link
