Moshe Levy – IDF’s 12th Chief of StaffMoshe was born in Tel Aviv in 1936 to a Jewish Iraqi family. Nicknamed Moshe Vachetzi (lit. Moshe and a half) because of his height, Moshe was drafted into the IDF in 1954 where he excelled as a soldier, commander, and then officer.During the 1956 Sinai Campaign, Moshe participated in the only parachute jump in IDF history – the jump at the Mitla Pass. He served in an array of prominent military roles until his 1983 appointment as chief of staff – the IDF’s first chief of staff of Sephardic origin.During his tenure, Moshe organized a strong and effective defense against Palestinian Arab terror attacks that intensified after the First Lebanon War, and was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Nahal and Givati Brigades.After four years of serving as chief of staff, Moshe retired and entered the private sector. He served on the board of the Israel Aerospace Industries, Israel Electric Corporation, Trans-Israel Highway (Road 6), and was the director of the Israel Anti-Drug Authority.On January 8, 2008, Moshe passed away after suffering from a severe stroke.My Nation Lives עמי-חי -- source link
