Photo by: Nasrollah Kasraian / Ashura ceremony of “Nakhl gardani” in Abyaneh, a mixture of Islamic and ancient rites. “The Nakhl” or date palm is a wooden frame which on Tasu'a is covered with coloured banners an on Ashura with black banners and donated jewels and is carried on the backs of men and followed by groups of mourners through the streets and neighborhoods of the village. The man on top of the palm structure is responsible for guiding it. All along the passage of the palm, goats and sheep are sacrificed and “esfand” (wild rueincense) in burned. The palm is set in front of the houses of those that have made vows or that have lost a loved one during that year. Residents of the two large neighborhoods of Abyanah compete to make their ceremony more magnificent. On Ashura the palm of the lower village is taken to the spring located below the village and after partaking in a dinner given to fulfill a religious vow. The mourners return the palm to its appointed place. / Late 80s -- source link
