So in the run up to Christmas I’m doing a count-down (well, a count-up). Twelve days of books! But just like the song, I’m going to increase the number of books each day, with a theme. I’ll link the previous posts on each new one, but if you’d like to follow along I’ll also be tagging them ‘hermitknut’s bookmas’. On the Third Day of Christmas… the very biggest fans. The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James is a combination of fluff and terror that sounds like it shouldn’t work - but it really, really does. Romy is living on a colony spacecraft alone as it travels to a new planet, studying and writing fanfiction and maintaining the ship. She’s also only about sixteen. Why she’s alone - why her parents aren’t with her - is something that comes out over the course of the novel. She’s a great character and the pace of the novel is brilliant, drawing you in and then giving you an amazing combo of fluffy romance and scary thriller. The Fandom by Anna Day comes out in the new year, and it’s about a group of friends at a convention who end up in the fictional universe that they’re fans of. The main character of that universe dies, so they have to step in and figure out how to bring the plot to its conclusion. This was fun, but it wasn’t until the final… quarter? of the book that it really started to impress. The way the ending works really won me over to the whole book, and I’d love to reread it with that knowledge.Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell is an old favourite of mine. Cath is a character I really get; I love the way she develops over the course of the story. She’s starting at uni for the first time with her twin sister, Wren, and trying to figure out life and confidence and romance and family as she does so. She’s also in the middle of writing a hugely popular fanfiction - and trying to get it finished before it gets seriously jossed. A really good, hopeful story with realistic characters.Previously:On the First Day of Christmas… my favourite book of all time. On the Second Day of Christmas… books about people exploding. -- source link
