girlactionfigure: Eliezer Ben-Yehuda – The Father of Modern Hebrew“The Hebrew language can live only if we revive the nation and return it to the fatherland.”Ben-Yehuda was born Eliezer Yitzhak Perlman in 1858 in Luzhki, a small town in Russian Empire, and first became acquainted with the Hebrew language at cheder (a traditional Jewish elementary school). As he grew older, he became involved in the Zionist movement and concluded that the only way to unite all Jews in Israel was to revive the Hebrew language. In 1881, Ben-Yehuda immigrated to Israel where he promoted and taught Hebrew at various institutions, wrote the first modern day Hebrew dictionary, and was the editor of several Hebrew-language newspapers. He was the driving force behind the establishment of Committee of the Hebrew Language – an organization that oversaw the revival of Hebrew and that still exists today.Ben-Yehuda spoke to his son, Ben-Zion, only in Hebrew, making him the first native speaker of modern Hebrew. On December 16, 1922, Eliezer passed away and was buried on Mount Olives, where over 30,000 people came to pay respects. My Nation Lives עמי-חי -- source link
