dreamhunter-enthusiast: lamardeuse: sunflowyr: errolwiththepost: congenitaldisease: Daniele Watts, an African-American actress who has starred in Hollywood films such as Django Unchained, was “handcuffed and detained” by Los Angeles police officers after being mistaken for a prostitute for kissing her white husband in public. More on this story can be found here “She said when she reminded the officer of his oath to “protect and serve,” he replied, ‘My job’s not to serve people like you.’ ” ‘My job’s not to serve people like you.’ ‘My job’s not to serve people like you.’ ‘My job’s not to serve people like you.’ Has everybody got that? Does anyone still think any of this bullshit ‘has nothing to do with race’? This isn’t just race, but a combination of anti sex worker thought and racism. don’t dismiss the part about how they treated her that way because they thought she was a sex worker and that the police treat real sex workers inhumanely. the fact that they mistook her for one is racist. the fact that this made them think they could treat her like she isn’t a human with rights is both racist and anti sex worker. the point also shouldn’t be oh they should’ve never arrested her because she’s not a real sex worker because even actual sex workers shouldn’t be treated this way. I don’t mean to divert the issue at all btw, just wanted to add some nuance to it cuz of the notes had swerfy undertones. -- source link
