lizziethereader: Weekly Bookish Question #253 (October 3rd - October 9th): How do you feel about non-translated foreign language sentences in books? (I don’t mean the odd “merci” or “ti amo”, but actual sentences or sometimes even short paragraphs). Whose job is it to translate? The author’s? The editor’s? The reader’s, if they happen to not speak those languages and want to understand? I feel like I don’t know a single thing the little girl from Jane Eyre said. So much French. I am sure there have been more books I’ve read with lots of Spanish in them, but I can read enough Spanish to get at least a hint of what’s going on, but I don’t know any French that isn’t a loan word to English. -- source link
