So for the past several months I’ve been designing a great big new project that will take me probably at least a year to complete, but is deliciously complicated and I think rather beautiful. So here is your sneak peak. This is just the basic idea - what I’m aiming for is to use traditional Turkmen colors such as red, black, yellow and maybe white in the final stitching. It will be approx. 32″x32″ on Aida 14 cloth. The idea was inspired in large part from a fantastic book I picked up months ago by Eric Broug, a Dutch artist, called “Islamc Geometric Design.” Being a fan of grids in general, I thought it was totally fascinating how one could create stars and other interlocking geometric complexities using nothing more than a straight edge and a compass! That’s right, no measuring angles, complex math etc. Well, in the book he shows you how to actually make some of these designs and from that practice, I just went wild :) Now of course my work is not Islamic because none of the patterns I created are traditional in any sense, but I will say that their geometric inventiveness certainly gave me that push to come up with something of my own after months of what I’ll call “needle block” where I couldn’t think of a thing. I’ll continue to provide updates as I move along through various stages of the project and of course answer any questions you may have. -- source link
