GRR Martin is a history buff, and a lot of how he writes Game of Thrones comes from what he’s studied of history, especially European history. It won’t help you understand actual events that happened in history, but it will give you a good insight into the mindset of people living in those time periods…not to mention what kinds of things may have been behind the scenes that never made into the history books, but still led to the events that did. -- source link
