Clay chamber pot (America, c. 1820).Many Americans didn’t have “privies” (outhouses), especially inwarmer regions. Privies were much more common in colder regions, andin more densely-populated areas.Most households, even if they had a privy, had at least one or twochamber pots, usually ceramic and with lids. They were stored underthe bed and used at night, when waking up in the morning, and byinvalids who couldn’t walk to the privy. Emptying the chamber potswas a daily chore, either tossing the contents down the privy or outa window. -- source link
