jstn: It’s time to start taking the wraps off what I’ve been working on! My new company is Lightscale Labs, an environmental testing startup in Portland, and we’re going to provide cutting edge analytical chemistry services for everything biological and legal in the state of Oregon. Environmental testing is all about discovering and quantifying what’s in the air, water, and food we consume. Our lab will be equipped with highly specialized equipment for the application of chromatography, which involves using gas and liquid to separate biological compounds into their constituent parts. This kind of testing is extremely important to a wide variety of agriculture, as well as water and soil safety. We’ll be able to test for trace amounts of harmful pesticides, tell a hops grower whether or not their harvest is free of mold, or show a vintner exactly how a particular grape will affect the taste of their wine. Our first lab opens later this fall, and I’ll have a lot more to say about it in the coming months. We’re currently building the lab itself (see some progress shots above) and I’m writing a lot of software to help run it and deliver scientific results to our future clients. Chromatography is an old science. The technology has been advancing rapidly (especially lately, given new demand) but the products and services surrounding it haven’t kept pace. My intention is to take everything I’ve learned about digital experience and design thus far, and apply it to an industry that hasn’t seen anything like it yet.I’m keeping my home base in New York, but I’ll be in Portland every six weeks or so while we’re getting things underway. Please follow @lightscalelabs for further updates or watch this space. More soon! Man I miss you, thank you for putting your brilliance and energy towards this! -- source link
